A parent’s blessing is of great importance in folklore. However, heroes often have to extort a blessing from his parents. In that case, the hero usually says: “If you give me your blessing, I will go, and if you don’t give me your blessing, I will go.” In Russian folklore, the parents do usually bless their child, but where the blessing is refused, the hero may perish. In epic songs, however, the hero routinely defies his parents.
